How to play Peg Solitaire

Start Peg Solitaire by looking at the playing area and its controls. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Look at what changes after your first action.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

A careful first round

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
