How to play Reversi

Start Reversi by looking at the playing area and its controls. When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Keep the objective visible.

Your goal

When neither player has a legal move, the player with more discs on the board wins; equal totals are a draw. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Black moves first. Highlighted cells show legal placements.
  2. Place a disc to trap one or more opponent discs in a straight line.
  3. Every trapped line from that placement is flipped.
  4. If a player has no legal move, the turn automatically passes.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

Black–white–empty can become black–black–black when Black plays in the empty square. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

A placement must flip at least one opposing disc; simply placing beside your own discs is not enough. Compare the situation with the worked example. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
