How to play Futoshiki

Start Futoshiki by looking at the playing area and its controls. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Read the objective before making your first input. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

A useful example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
