How to play Gomoku

Make Gomoku your next activity in the game library. Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Use the example below to understand a decision. Check the rule that explains your first action. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Keep the aim in sight

Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 places the first stone on an empty intersection.
  2. Player 2 places a stone and turns alternate.
  3. Look for open lines and block your opponent’s threats.
  4. A winning line immediately ends the round.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

Four consecutive stones with an empty point at both ends creates two possible finishing moves. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Check the stated objective.

Watch out for this

This is freestyle Gomoku, not Renju: there are no special forbidden opening or double-three rules. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
