How to play Russian Solitaire

Bring your attention to one round of Russian Solitaire. Build four suit foundations from ace to king. Use the example below to understand a decision. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Yukon-style deal, same-suit building, no stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

Build a steady rhythm

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Build four suit foundations from ace to king. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Move any face-up card and its tail onto the next higher rank of the same suit. Kings fill empty columns.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Controls

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. Use the control method described here for this activity. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

A heart 6 fits a heart 7, not a spade 7. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
