How to play Word Deduction

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Word Deduction. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Guess a five-letter answer from the included collection. Entries must contain five letters; accepted guesses are not checked against a complete dictionary.

Try a deliberate move

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

With APPLE as the answer and ALLEE as the guess, the first A and final E are in the right places. The extra L and E are not both counted as present. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
